Parents & Guardians
As a parent, you want your child to grow up prepared for the future. This can mean many things, but to most of us it means making sure your child is properly educated to enter the career he or she desires and arming him or her with the life skills needed to make responsible adult decisions. That's why a college education is so important! A college education can open up a world of possibilities for your child. College students are exposed to new ideas, activities and people. College graduates have many more career
choices than non-graduates. They also earn more and are far less likely to be unemployed.
While the student is enrolled in a GEAR UP school, parents are asked to support the student’s goals to complete high school and attend college, as well as learn about higher education and student financial aid programs. Throughout the year there will be information sessions that will educate parents on how to better prepare their child to succeed academically in order complete the requirements necessary for high school graduation and college entrance.
Parents and guardians are invited to attend workshops that will help them understand what opportunities are open to their children as well as how to take advantage of them. In addition, parents and guardians have a standing invitation to attend any of the programming provided to students.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to volunteer for program activities and accompany students on college trips. As a requirement of the grant, parents will be asked to complete GEAR UP surveys (generally in January). GEAR UP is seeking volunteers. Volunteers provide homework assistance, read with students, or assist with organizational skills. But, most importantly, volunteers make a difference in a child’s life!
